Nesting Tool in Designer Edition

nesting tool

For those of you that own the Designer Edition software — and for those of you that are just thinking about it – -I think the Nesting Tool is an underused feature in that software!  Here’s a little tutorial on how I used it today when creating my Starfish tray!  (Yes, I know its mid-August – -but I REFUSE to give up on Summer!   My family is going to the Outer Banks of NC for a beach week in mid-September, when the rates are cheaper!!)

First, I duplicated all of the starfish that I thought I might want to use.   And then, I drew a rectangle the size of the vinyl that I had.   The piece I was using was 6″w x 3.5″h.   (Now, could I have rotated & finagled those starfish to fit in there?   Probably, but this is sooooooo much easier & faster).    This is such a great way to use up those small pieces of vinyl or HTV that you might have!

Next, in the Nesting Tool Window – select “Use Selected”” — and be sure that your rectangle is selected.  Then, I chose 2 rotations and padding of 3 — The padding is the amount of space between the items.  The default, is 1, but I like a little more room for weeding.

Then — simply click Nest — and they automatically all rotate into place!  They may look like they are touching, but when you zoom in — they really are not.    And as you can see by the selection dimensions – they easily fit onto that piece of vinyl!

So save all of those small pieces of vinyl — You never know when you might need them & the Nesting tool will help you get the most out of them!  Be sure to subscribe to the blog to get these tutorials and event announcemts right to your mail box!  New things are on the horizon & you won’t want to miss them!

Thanks & until next time – -Hugs, Terri

Love the nesting tool. I saw a Youtube video using the pixscan mat and the nesting tool. If you have an odd scrap of vinyl you wan to use, use pixscan (take a picture of the vinyl on the pixscan mat, import the picture)
When you have the pixscan image loaded, you can select the vinyl as the area to use and nest what you want to cut out. Cool.

    Hi Terri!

I LOVE this tray! What font did you use?

  3. So cute! I never find trays like this…you know how tech challenged I am. Where would I subscribe to the blog?
